Ah Beng goes to East Coast

I’m dedicating this post to anyone who at one point in their misguided youth ever (secretly) thought ah bengs and ah lians were cool. Or might have ever been one before (not judging!) I could never bring myself to be one but I’ll admit that there was a point in my life where I thought the outrageously tacky dressing was kind-of-almost-ok-more-than-a-little-bit awesome.

It seems like my kids may just revive the ah beng/lian look and give it a new grunge meets j-pop twist. Basically, a walking fashion disaster.

And yes, I actually let my kids out of the house looking like this. Very terriberrrr parenting.

LOL Daphne, I don’t know what you’re going on about here =) THey look adorable! In fact, I reckon Kristen looks like one of those hip B-boys (you know how they always have one pants leg hiked up above their knee exactly like that?) about to break into a dance! Far from Beng/Lian-ness!

Seriously not beng enough?? Tru got this top for a Christmas present and I’ve been wanting to let him wear it but I could never find a suitable outing for this so I had to go all out to max out the beng-ness for the photo shoot. The tshirt also comes with a silver chain + dog tag but he refused to put it on..

Actually Kirsten doesn’t look that lian but those were like the most gaudy colors I could find in her wardrobe. And she did the hiked up pants all by herself.

Then we must be all terrible parents. I am guilty of letting my toddler dress herself and there was a time we went to the mall with her wearing pajamas! For me, it’s all about her comfort. I don’t know why but our daughter have the same way of wearing their pants. I would always try to fix it but would ride back up her knees for some reason.

hahaa no la the only difference is I make them wear this just so that I can take pictures and laugh.

And my kids wear pyjamas out all the time. Most of the time when we bring them out at night, we dress them in PJs so that if they fall asleep on the way back, we won’t have to change them again.

They looked perfectly ok to me, in those outfits. I think you haven’t seen how I dressed mine (esp. the boy) – singlets with shorts pulled up to chest – absolutely like “old uncle”!!! And he paraded like that in shopping malls.. ahaha! Now your “terrible parenting” made me feel guilty.

They’re dressed very well actually =) And Tru really looks like a little ah beng. Sister’s less so because ah lians don’t wear so many polka dots, hahaa!

Did you ask Tru to stand the way how Ah Beng should stand? Ha ha..
If Tru is Ah Beng then I think he will have plenty of Ah Lian chasing after him. The most “yan dao” (in Hokkien) Ah Beng in town. As for Kristen, she is too sweet to be Ah Lian.
