i embarrass myself sometimes

A tooth for a tooth

I just had all my wisdom teeth removed yesterday, under general anesthesia because I’m terrified of dentists and I’m not going to be awake while they yank out four of my teeth. At first, everyone was like “Are you insane, why are you taking out all four at one go? Just do one side first” but then I would have to go through the toothache and surgery all over again and I don’t really have the luxury of being out of action for another week with the kids and all.

So right now, I’m paying the price for taking out four teeth. Both sides of my face are all puffy, I’m ravenously hungry and I’m eating like an baby, by pushing mashed potatoes straight to the back of my throat. I’m also still heavily medicated but then that’s a good thing because I get to lie in bed all day.

On the bright side, it was actually fun being listening to doctors banter in the OR, like a real episode of Grey’s Anatomy. I thought they would be all serious but they were actually laughing about how the next patient after me was going in to remove 8 teeth (insert toothless joke). And you know how the doctor always tells you to count to ten after they inject you with the anesthesia? I’ve always wanted to see how long I could last like maybe it’s a sign of my tremendous will power and the doctors will be all like “That patient counted right up to 28. Respect”. Guess how long I counted up to: 2 seconds.

Next thing I knew, they were telling me to wake up and breathe and I was trying to fight the drowsiness like “ok I’m awake, I’m fine” but the nurse said I was incoherent, which was mostly thanks to the fact that I couldn’t feel my entire lower jaw or my tongue.

Anyway, I’m back home now, with four wisdom teeth to show for it. You probably don’t want to see it but for those that do, I’m putting it in a discreet apture link so it’s not like I didn’t warn you about the grossness.

I’m putting it under my pillow for the tooth fairy because these babies are so massive it’s worth $10 a pop at least. Or maybe I’ll keep it till the kids lose their first tooth and make up a story about the evil tooth fairy who makes their tooth grow really huge while they sleep so they wake up and freak out when they see my tooth instead of theirs. So many options here.

PS. Tru was horrified to see my teeth and he tried shoving it back into my mouth to make me feel better, which was a sweet gesture but also very painful.

Hi Daphne, I’ve been following your blog ever since I stumbled upon it from another blogger.

I like your style of writing; very witty and funny LOL! Keep it up!

As for your teeth, those are pretty neat and clean. I’ve extracted four teeth recently (for my braces) and mine looks like tusks!

Thanks Grace! And wow, those are some badass teeth, worth at least $20. My bottom teeth were cut up so I didn’t get to see how big they were, I only got to keep the top ones.

I extracted 4 wisdom teeth at a go too! I was given a choice, extract 2 by 2, it’ll be under LA and 4 at a go is GA. I opted for the GA definitely! The doctor who operated on me gave me a special injection during the surgery (i don’t know what’s the name), I don’t feel any numbness, no drooling and no pain after the surgery and yet, I can still feel my jaw, so I can eat normal meals : )

btw…i don’t remember counting more 3 on the OT bed :)

I’ll take GA over LA anytime, I mean, I get to avoid the trauma of witnessing it and I still get to take a nice long nap – best! I’m now a little worried about removing the stitches on Friday, if only they’ll give me another round of GA while they take it out.

I’m glad I went thought the same procedure you did when I was in my teens and at that age, was still gungho and not as cowardly as I am today. It’s true they say you get more chicken shit as you grow old.

Take care, I survived on something yucky but apparently very nutrituous, according to my uncle who is a doctor. Hot hot milo with an egg cracked into it. Well, breaks the monotony of porridge all the time.

Serious??!! That sounds like something people drink in ancient China, except I know they didn’t have milo. So does it end up like a half-boiled egg or are you supposed to beat the yolk into the milo to make it all thick and creamy? I will make the husband try first to see if he gets diarrhea.

I extracted three of my wisdom teeth at one shot too. Despite what people may say, at least you get the pain over and done with ONCE! Haha!

My survival tips? (i absolve all blame of any weight gain you may have from this though)… Haagen Daaz, baby! :) That and Crystal Jade porridge. Of cos, regular one will do, but I figured this is the only meals for me anyhow, so cost-wise it still makes $-sense!

Hi-5! I have 2 tubs of Haagen Daaz in my freezer now – Macadamia Nut Brittle and Cappuccino Truffle. Although it’s too much of a hassle to lug the kids out to Crystal Jade so I’m content with packed mashed potatoes from KFC.

Enjoy the time out and may the pain go away soon! I had a root canal done and that was 10x worse than wisdom teeth extraction! Hope I never have to do it again.

Ok, I can’t imagine anything being 10 times worse than wisdom teeth extraction. Giving birth is only 8.37 times worse. Suffice to say, I’m not ever going to do a root canal, give me dentures anytime.
