to Truett with love

An Angry Birds party

This has been a crazy, crazy week. With the trip coming up, it has been a mad rush to pack and run errands and get some work stuff sorted before we head to Sydney tomorrow. And like all that wasn’t enough, we also decided to put together a small party to celebrate Truett’s 5th birthday in school.

Initially, it was supposed to be a simple, fuss-free affair – I had planned to pick up a small cake from a bakery near my place, pack a few goodie bags for the kids and be done with it. But I should have known that there’s no such thing as a fuss-free kids party.

Truett requested for an Angry Birds cake so I set about looking for a (relatively) cheap option. There were none. The ones that didn’t cost over $150 were really tacky ones where they printed a low-res Angry Birds image and stuck it on top of a standard round cake. Tru was so sweet and he was all like “it’s ok, it’s still quite nice, I will like it, I promise.”

Then I figured, what the heck, I might as well make one myself. It’ll already be nicer if I just buy a cake and pop on a couple of Angry Birds toppers. And then I thought, since my mom makes a really delicious carrot cake, I’d do the whole thing on my own from scratch. So Truett helped my mom to bake the cake and I did the decor by piping some green cream cheese frosting, throwing on 2 Cadbury Marvellous Creations bars as the pigs’ fortress and sticking some figurines on top.

Behold, Truett’s homemade Angry Birds cake.

For the goodie bags, I found some brown paper bags, filled them with treats, wrote a small note and sealed them with tiny wooden pegs.

I just need to pick up a couple of Angry Birds mylar balloons and we’re all set for a squawking good time tomorrow. Sorry, bad pun but I’m exhausted and my brain is fried.

Sometimes I wonder why I kill myself doing all this but then I see the look on his face and I’m like, “you know what, so worth it.”

The cake and party bags look good! Am sure Truett will look at photos of the birthday party in time to come and tell K and F “see, my birthday party!”

I nearly killed myself baking mini cakes (I think over 50 pcs) when DD had her 1st birthday celebration in school. And killed myself a second time on the same day by cooking dinner from scratch (10 dishes including soup) for an extended family dinner party to celebrate her b day.

The things we do for our kids.

I know, right?!! Anything to make them smile…I guess the good thing is that we discover talents we’ve never had in the process. :)

Thanks babe! Birthdays are stressful affairs these days and when there are 3 to sort out every year, it’s tough to come up with fun but affordable alternatives.

Haha my sentiments exactly! Or my motto is why buy when your mom can bake.

Noticed that even the stickers have Truett’s name on them! May I know where you got them printed?

    • Reply Daphne June 12, 2013 at 12:21 am

I actually have a kids label business called Child Label and I had these specially printed for personal use. Can’t sell these though because I don’t have the license to use it commercially. But we’ve got tons of other cute designs if you’re looking for personalized labels. :)

Pretty cake! Am sure Truett likes it and appreciated it!
And thank you for the reminder that mothers sometimes busy ourselves to make our children happy! But we are entitled to it and its all worth it!

    Happy birthday, Truett!

Well said! What to do, mothers are so predictable, we’re happy when they’re happy.

    • Reply Daphne June 12, 2013 at 12:25 am

Hahahha I never saw myself as a baker either! And technically all I did was add the frosting + stick the toppers after the cake was done so big thanks to my mom for all the baking..

OMG before i read the text, i thought it was bought from some cake shop!
What an AWESOME mom you are! (but it’s really difficult to be a good parent nowadays huh)

    • Reply Daphne June 12, 2013 at 12:27 am

LOL Yiwei, you’re so sweet!! You’re right about the last bit though, too many awesome, talented moms these days and the standard is so high. But as long as the kids think I’m awesome it’s good enough haha

Love the cake and it really looks so pro. Way better than getting those low-res image cakes! Dedicated mommy for sure, and Truett sure is lucky!

    • Reply Daphne June 12, 2013 at 12:28 am

      Thanks Beverly! :)

I love what you have done. I’ve been taking classes on how to decorate cakes. But I STILL lack the courage to do what you have done! I am always thinking what if the kids in childcare are all sick after eating my DIY effort?! Can share where you found the Angry Bird toppers, I would like to “copy” your idea!

    • Reply Daphne June 12, 2013 at 12:32 am

Thanks Sue! Just go for it! I think as long as you use fresh ingredients they won’t fall sick. Although kids are quite frank and if it’s not nice they just won’t eat it haha.. But it’s ok, practice makes perfect. Oh, and I got the toppers from one of the Singapore Motherhood forums. Or some of the plastic figurines from Toys R Us will do. I think even Phoon Huat has quite a good selection, you can check them out.
