It’s a boy!

Uh huh. Looks like there’ll be more testosterone and manly grunts on the horizon because us girls are going to be outnumbered around here.

I know I’ve been saying how my gut feel was that it’s going to be another girl but turns out I was wrong again. That makes it 0 for 2 as far as my mother’s intuition goes. Well at least this time, I knew better than to call him Hailey for the first trimester so instead I called him baby just to be safe.

Speaking of names, the original plan was to call the next boy Travis but we were sitting in the doctor’s office and we both felt like this one didn’t feel like a Travis.

This one sort of feels like a Finn.

Not short for Finnegan or Finnick or Finley. Just Finn.

Finn Kao.

Ok bring on the jokes – seriously, if you can think of any puns, do share. We couldn’t think of any but just in case we’re missing out something obvious, it’s better to find out now than 5 years down the road when he goes to kindergarten.

yeah its quite cute but sounds like a very serious name

  • Reply Lily March 22, 2012 at 1:38 pm

Finn Kao sounds abit like fan gao (sleep in Cantonese)… I think Kao takes a dual-syllable name better! :)

    • Reply Daphne March 22, 2012 at 1:57 pm

Hahahahah fan gao is a good one! Ya we thought about doing a dual-syllable name too..

Although I wouldn’t mind if he turns out to love sleeping all the time.

    Hey Daphne!

Congratulations for another boy! Don’t worry about being outnumbered cos you still have the fourth try!

Finn is a nice name by itself. However, if you can’t find its two-syllable match, may I suggest how about having two english names? Finn xx Kao?

Just my two cents’ worth :) Happy naming!

    Hey Daphne!

I’ve never commented before but I’m a big BIG fan of your site, love it to bits! :) I chanced upon when I was checking out Bing’s website from Story of Bing (she’s my cuz, well her hub is ha) ANYWAY. I’m all the way from little old New Zealand and a belated congratulations! :)

All I thought when I saw Finn Kao was if he ever decided to come to NZ.. some mean kids might start calling him “Thin Cow”…. but then Finn reminds me of the guy off Glee… Handsome name ;) ;)

    • Reply Daphne March 23, 2012 at 1:27 pm

Hey Megan thanks you’re so sweet! Oh, small world, yeah i love Bing’s blog too. :)
Haha it seems like we’ll have to keep him away from NZ for a while…

Congratulations! I thought Sophia was going to be a boy and she was a girl so you have company in the non-psychic circle.

In terms of jokes I can only think of fin as in the fish ones. Not so bad in the grand scheme of things but then again I never good at coming up with witty nicknames. There will be more intelligent minds among us readers I’m sure :)

Yeah he’ll probably get the fish jokes a lot but i got daffy duck a lot as a kid so not so bad I guess..

  • Reply JM March 22, 2012 at 9:11 pm

I am sure your family name is already the subject of many puns – ‘kao’ sounds like ‘kau’ or dog in cantonese. Finn Kao would sound like ‘Din Kau’ or crazy dog.

Knowing how cruel kids can be …

    • Reply Daphne March 23, 2012 at 1:30 pm

I know!! Kao is like a super hard name to match. good thing i’m not a Tan or I’ll have to be tan-kao

  • Reply Candice March 22, 2012 at 9:31 pm

if i’m kirsten, i’d be most pleased with having another brother. it’s the best combination. don’t have to share her toys, dresses, bags, etc and have boys to order around the house! hurhurhur. (yes, i have two younger brothers)

p.s. names are such a headache! good luck!

Strangely enough she really wanted a girl to do all the girly things with her.. but you’re right, she’ll be happy to have a little brother to boss around

  • Reply Summer March 23, 2012 at 5:22 am

Hey Daphne, congrats it’s gonna be a dragon boy! =) I guess Kirsten will remain as the lovable and huggable princess, for now. Hee. As for names, just don’t name the kid ‘wah’ and anything similar if not it becomes wah kao. Anyway, yups, hope you had a great time in Disneyland and be in touch!

    Hi Daphne,

    Congratulations!

I am not good at choosing english names, I still haven’t given out to my daughter. We call her by her chinese name. You guys are great becoz you can think of such unique names. I can’t.

I also suggest a two-syllable name. Finn is a very low sound so it is difficult to call out loud. Imaging he is been naughty and you are so furious you called ‘Finn!!!’ – No response… and you are out of breath

    • Reply Daphne March 23, 2012 at 1:39 pm

Oh man mine is the opposite, Chinese names are the headache.. Haha when he’s in trouble I’ll usually call by their full name, which will be a lot of syllables like Truett Kao Kai Xuan COME HERE

  • Reply Andrea March 23, 2012 at 11:23 am

Hey Congrats!! Finn sounds like a super smart nerdy and cool at the same time, english kid.. I like it :) May I also suggest you consider Phineas (fi-ni-ears), from a very popular cartoon, Phineas and Ferb.. that character is so cool.. Not sure what it means though

    • Reply Daphne March 23, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Haha yeah we did think of Phineas but the cartoon looks a bit dorky so maybe not..

  • Reply Jillian March 23, 2012 at 11:35 pm

Finn was on our list of names as well since we didn’t know if no.3 was going to be a boy or a girl. Like you we thought “giraffe” was going to be a girl and we were totally wrong of course. When Luke appeared the husband exclaimed ” its a boy! and he has huge balls!” Men never fail to point out the important stuff….

Haha yeap better to have our bases covered just to be sure we’re not missing out on anything major

  • Reply Peg March 26, 2012 at 4:40 pm

After repeating the name in my head several times, I thought of “kin kao” which means to “eat(kin) rice(kao)” in Thai. But unless he is going to be hanging out with Thai kids, it wouldn’t really matter. Rice eating ain’t that bad I suppose.

    • Reply Daphne March 27, 2012 at 4:08 pm

Cool now I know how to say eat rice the next time I go bangkok! And you’re right, eating rice isn’t that bad..

LOVE the name Finn– we were also considering it for our son (one of two due in August). My only concern about the name was that damned television show– Glee. You know how it goes. Once some fictional character has a name and said character becomes beloved, suddenly everyone has that name.

Admittedly, we were thinking Finnr (the Norse version)…
