milestones & musings

8 weeks…and a milestone

It finally happened.

We all went to bed at 12.05 last night and the next time I opened my eyes to check the clock, it was 6.38 am. I couldn’t believe it, so I put on my specs, drew the curtains and it was true. I could see the faint streaks of daybreak making its way across the morning sky.

I thought maybe the lack of sleep was getting to me. That maybe I did wake up in the middle of the night for a feed and forgot about it. But then again, having to haul my ass out of bed in the middle of the night is the kind of wretched feeling I’m not likely to forget.

So I guess that means one thing: Finn has made it through his first night without waking up for a feed.

Oh, what’s that sound? It’s my sleep-deprived mommy brain doing a victory dance after sleeping 6 hours and 33 minutes.

UNINTERRUPTED, y’all!

And right on cue too, because he turns 8 weeks old today. Not that we’re having a competition or anything, but Kirsten did start sleeping through the night at 8 weeks old so it’s the record to beat around here.

Suddenly my life seems so much more beautiful.

PS. From experience, I fully expect him to regress over the next couple of weeks, but there is finally light at the end of my dark and sleepless tunnel.

PPS. Hang on, I’m going to pour myself a glass bubbly to celebrate.

PPPS. A glass of bubbly bubble tea, I mean.

I wish I could! Unfortunately, I buy my stash from Koi and every time I go, I order like 5-6 cups to store in the fridge as reserves.

Oh Mother! Kyle is 12 weeks and he’s NOT sleeping through the night yet. Lael and Paige slept through at 8 weeks, so I can’t figure out why he’s different. My sleepless tunnel goes on indefinitely. Sob…

Maybe he’s more hungry and needs more food… Hope he sleeps through the night soon, it’s probably just a matter of time

Well done Mommy. I think you deserve a pat on the shoulder more than him. Babies don’t just learn to sleep on their own out of nowhere, it is the hardwork and consistency Mommy put in that yield the fruit. :-)

Daphne, What did you do to train him to sleep through? sigh, i battled for 11mths now n it’s only recently that the lil one sleeps at 10pm (unfortunately that’s the earliest coz of my work) n wakes up once at 3am n 7am perhaps. It’d be a bonus if i get 6 hrs of uninterrupted sleep. More often than ever, i dare not sleep till 2am, after the coast is clear.

    • Reply Daphne October 30, 2012 at 12:03 pm

We’re a little hardcore when it comes to sleep training. We let them learn to fall asleep on their own in the cot, which involves letting them cry it out. We’ll pick them up every 5 minutes to calm them down and put them back in the cot while they’re still awake.

If he cries in the middle of the night, depending on his cry, I’ll let him fall back asleep on his own (if it’s mild) or pick him up (if he’s in a frenzy) to calm him down without feeding.

Initially it can be more tiring than feeding him and letting him go back to sleep but after a while, they learn to adjust their sleeping patterns.

ohhh the CIO method. We tried that out a while back, but FAILED. day one took her 15mins to get back to sleep. Day two 10mins…we thought WOOPEE we are seeing the light, then day three half and hour, n four went up to 45mins! that was when i gave up!. a PD was saying that it’s best to start after 1yo though..that’s when it’s ok for the kid to cry for long periods. M thinking of visiting the method again. only problem, the lil one sleeps on the mattress next to my bed right now and has this habit of climbing up my bed to look for me. I’m just afraid if i’m not in the room and let her cry it out, she might climb n topple over the bed (she’s able to get down the bed with ease when she’s calm though). Any suggestions on how i should execute?

Actually each kid reacts differently so this might not work for your girl. I find that it’s tougher to do this after they’re 1 because they’re used to being carried or rocked and it’s tougher to adjust.

I did this for all 3 kids from birth and they were able to sleep on their own from about 3-6 mths old onwards. Truett took the longest and he screamed the loudest as well.

Maybe you can try giving her water when she wakes up at night? Or carry her until she goes back to sleep without feeding.

At first, I was worried that they would be hungry if they didn’t get milk in the middle of the night but my PD told us that most babies are able to last the night without feeding by 6 mths and they usually need milk for comfort more than hunger so maybe you can comfort her in other ways instead of feeding.
